9-10 June, 2009 Vodaworld, Midrand
Official event of the Environmental Goods and Services South Africa Forum (EGSF)
GREEN SUPPLY AND DEMAND In order to avoid critical shortages in energy, water and land fill sites, as well as irreparable harm from pollution, and spurred on by the threat of climate change, government is rolling out legislation to regulate the use of limited resources and shield the environment from further degradation.
In parallel businesses, consumers, public and international buyers are demanding more environmentally friendly goods and services, the procurement of which helps them minimise their impact on the environment and as such helps them achieve their environmental objectives and commitments.
To meet this ‘green demand’ suppliers are offering a growing number of environmental choices in every possible product category, by introducing new low impact product ranges or by intervening in the input choices, production and supply chains of their current products and materials. In many instances this environmental leadership is gaining them a competitive advantage regardless of sector or position in the value chain.
These market forces, have in turn stimulated a burgeoning Environmental Goods and Services (EGS) sector, consisting of activities that produce goods and services to measure, prevent, limit, minimize or correct damage to water, air and soil, as well as problems related to waste, noise and eco-systems. Traditionally geared towards compliance, the EGS sector is now also the ‘go to’ sector for companies and cities who want to go beyond the statutory minimums and set themselves apart by adopting higher voluntary environmental standards.
