Rough Grinding. Unless the mirror comes pre-generated, the initial curve will have to be ground into the mirror.
Previously in rough grinding we deepened the center of the mirror's face either by grinding with coarse grit and a tool, slumping in a kiln over a mold, or purchasing the glass pre-generated. During fine grinding, we'll grind the mirror face against a tool with a series of ever finer grits.
The Tools: Grinding & Polishing. You will need two tools: A hard tool for rough and fine grinding, and a soft tool, or pitch lap, for polishing and figuring. Traditionally, the pitch lap was made on top of the grinding tool. We recommend using plaster disks for tool substrates, and that you use separate disks for these two tools.
Here is a 25 inch mirror on top of the fine grinding tool with pads applied. And here is the result after 5 hrs of machine polishing starting from a 20 micron aluminum oxide grind. Note that the edge is not as reflective. Materials Needed.

Jun 23, 2014· I purchased my 8" mirror making kit from Newport Glass and it included a Pyrex blank, a plate glass tool, all the grits needed from silicon carbide #80 grit for rough grinding through cerium oxide for polishing and figuring. The kit also contains enough pitch to make two pitch laps if you had to.

A tile tool is less expensive than a glass tool (either Pyrex or plate), and because it is naturally grooved, it works much faster than an un-grooved glass tool - many people find it works about twice as fast. We use tile tools in all our mirror courses at Stellafane.

By switching mirror on top / tool on top, we keep the shape of the mirror. At this stage, we can use finer grit. The courses are now reduced to 1/3 center over center. Mark the larger holes with a Sharpie and continue grinding until those are gone. That's a sign that means you can switch for a finer grit. Go down to Silicon Carbide #320.

In researching how to make the tool, Ive ran across some conflicting instructions. Would I create the tool flat or make it convex in accordance to the final shape of my mirror (an 8 f/8 parabola)?
Mirror grinding and figuring consists of four major steps (plus aluminizing). Rough and Fine grinding use hard tools (glass, tile or metal) and harder then glass abrasive grit (Silicon Carbide or Aluminum Oxide). Polishing and Figuring use a soft pitch tool and ultra fine abrasive (Cerium Oxide or Rouge).
